These home made mulling spices are the perfect thoughtful but easy DIY for last minute gifts.
The holiday season is officially in full swing! While it’s a wonderful time of year, it’s also a very busy season. That’s thanks largely to the fact that you probably have a number of holiday gifts to purchase. If the season gets away from you and you need a quick and easy gift idea, we can help! These homemade mulling spices are the perfect last minute gift DIY.
To make eight packets of this great gift, you’ll need:
- 4 oranges cut into 10 slices each (discard the ends)
- 8 ounces of fresh ginger
- 8 cinnamon sticks
- 24 whole star anise pods
- 40 whole black peppercorns
- 24 whole allspice berries
- 16 whole cloves
Preheat your oven to 175 degrees F and set three wire racks on three large rimmed baking sheets.
On two of the racks, lay out your orange slices. “Cook” them in the oven for four hours, flipping and rotating your racks halfway through. Your oranges should have crisp peels. Let them cool on the racks.
In the meantime, use a mandolin to slice 1/8” thick pieces of ginger. Arrange on your rack and “cook” for three hours, flipping and rotating halfway through.
In each of eight bags or sachets, arrange 5 orange slices, a few slices of ginger, a cinnamon stick, 3 anise pods, 5 peppercorns, 3 allspice berries, and 2 cloves. Give these fragrant homemade gifts to show how much you care during this season of giving!
